Over 140 representatives from local and State governments and the private sector attended a free symposium featuring the North Carolina Floodplain Mapping Program and the products that are being generated by this project. The Statewide Mapping Advisory Committee of the NC Geographic Information Coordinating Council sponsored the symposium on the afternoon of August 20th to introduce local governments, State agencies, and surveyors to this significant new resource. The symposium was an opportunity to learn more about Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) data and its uses for flood map development by the State's Floodplain Mapping Program, specifically LIDAR's use in elevation determination. An overview of LIDAR data collection, quality control, and products was provided, as well as background on the State's Information Technology system, data distribution, and community sharing agreements as part of the North Carolina Floodplain Mapping Program.
